Burnley dog attack boy faces more surgery
FLASHBACK: How the Lancashire Telegraph reported the story of the attack
FLASHBACK: How the Lancashire Telegraph reported the story of the attack

A BOY who was attacked by the family pet dog will need more surgery to rebuild his nose, his family said.

Connor Smith, 13, was playing with the family Staffordshire Bull Terrier Meg when he was bitten on the nose by the dog in Montgomery Grove, Burnley.

The family said Connor, now on strong anti-biotics, was playing with the dog when the attack took place on Saturday at 7.50pm.

The teenager will need to return to hospital for more reconstructive surgery if the skin graft from his ear takes.

But the family do not know whether doctors will be able to completely repair Connor's nose.

Connor was taken To Blackburn Royal Hospital after the attack before being transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital for surgery.

Doctors operated on the Hameldon Community College's nose the day after the attack on and he was allowed home the same evening.

Meg, who the family had for three years, was taken to the vet and destroyed shortly after the attack.

Connor is currently off school and it is unclear whether he will be able to return in September.

Stepmother Gina Smith said the teenager would need more reconstructive surgery to his face over the next few months.

Ms Smith said: "He went back to hospital and they did a skin graft at the end of his nose.

"Part of his nose at the end is missing.

"They have begin to reconstruct his nose with the graft but we have to wait and see if it takes.

"If that goes well they will see him again.

"If it takes it will take a full six months for it to heal.

"He has been an extremely brave young man. He is very upset at the loss of his dog, we all are.

"Had he not been playing with the dog this would never have happened.

"Meg was a family pet-she was a lovely dog who was given a brilliant home by the family.

"It was just a tragic accident and the family are very upset."
