HOMES in Burnley are set for a new lease of life - inside and out - as part of multi-million pound investment programmes.

People living in south-west Burnley, Casterton, Padiham and Hapton will see internal revamps taking place 12 months earlier than expected, after landlords Calico pledged to bring forward improvement works.

Part of a £20million programme, the work, affecting 2,000 homes, will see new kitchens and rewiring projects taking place.

The landlords, who took over Burnley council's housing stock in 2000, are working towards meeting the Government's decent homes standards - for which there is national deadline of 2010.

Adele Livesey, Calico investment head, said: "I'm really proud to say that we are now looking to complete all works by summer 2009, which is brilliant news. We've had lots of positive feedback at the roadshows we've held.

"Everyone has enjoyed finding out more about what's happening and choosing their new kitchens "These are significant improvements to people's homes and in some cases it's making a big difference to their lives."

Calico officials say the firm will be contacting residents individually over the next few months and plans are in place to stage more road-shows to explain how the initiative will work.

Meanwhile Burnley council has announced plans to extend a facelifting prog-ramme for homes along principal routes, which has been running since 2002.

Currently the local auth-ority carries out works on the front of homes, on the likes of stonework, gutt-ering, gable ends, window frames, roofs and doors.

Works have been carried out along Accrington Road, Colne Road, Coal Clough Lane, Hufling Lane and Hollingreave Road.

But any properties which face new development areas - or are near conservation areas - will also qualify.

Now it has been decided by councillors that it will extend the scheme to the rear of such properties.

This will mean less homes are improved in any one year but the initiative will mean more comprehensive overhauls.
