AN 18-YEAR-OLD has died after a head-on road collision on the outskirts of Burnley this morning.

He was driving a blue Ford Fiesta along Bacup Road, Cliviger, at around 5.20am, when his vehicle was involved in a head-on smash with a Mitsubishi L200.

Police have confirmed that the teenager, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries.

The 45-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi suffered shock and has been taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for checks, but he is not thought to be seriously hurt.

The road has been closed from Crown Point Road to the Burnley Road East junction while Lancashire Police’s road traffic unit begin their inquiries.

An appeal for witnesses has been issued and anyone who saw the incident is being asked to contact the police non-emergency number on 101.

Sergeant Gareth Hill from the Force Road Policing Unit said: “We are at the early stages of the investigation and we are trying to establish the circumstances of exactly what has happened.

“I would appeal to anybody that witnessed the collision itself or saw either vehicle being driven in the area prior to the incident to contact police.”
