A LANDMARK pub will be transformed into an Italian restaurant and bar after planners gave it the go-ahead.

The former Fighting Cocks pub in Red Lees Road, Cliviger, will be re-named Nino’s Cliviger.

The building is owned by Ignazio Pillitteri, who has run Nino’s in Bacup Road, Rawtenstall for 25 years.

Councillors in Burnley approved the plans on Thursday, with stipulations that structural features of the building are preserved for heritage reasons.

Mayor of Burnley, Coun David Heginbotham, had spoken out urging planners to approve the package as he believed it would boost the local economy.

The building will include a 100-cover traditional Italian restaurant with private dining rooms, a bar and lounge where up to 60 people can enjoy Italian tapas, and an outside area.

It is likely to create up to 30 full and part-time new jobs.

The building previously housed the Ridoy Indian restaurant and bar, but it has been empty since February last year.
