ENCAMPMENT Travellers’ vehicles at the farm in Cliviger
ACTION is being taken to remove a group of travellers from a farmer’s field in Cliviger.
Police have served a notice on the group of around eight caravans and trailers that set up camp on land belonging to Foxstones Farm, between Foxstones Lane and Red Lees Road.
The vehicles pitched up at the site earlier this week and have been causing a stir in the village.
A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “We have issued the group with a section 61 notice to leave the site.”
It is now expected that the travellers will move on from the Cliviger site over the weekend. Police have to go to the courts to obtain an order to move the travellers on. Travellers have set up camp at a number of sites across East Lancashire in the past two months.
Last week a group set up at the site of the former Towneley High School site in Towneley Park and are yet to move on, despite attempts by Burnley Council to get rid of them.
A group have set up home on a number of sites in Rossendale, being moved on from Rossendale Council’s Futures Park, in Bacup, the old Stand Athletic FC ground, off Blackburn Road, in Haslingden, and the New Hall Hey business park, in Rawtenstall, before a dramatic seven-hour stand-off with police near Haslingden Leisure Centre.
Groups of travellers have also been moved on from land sites in and around the Hyndburn, Blackburn and Pendle areas.

What a shame for these poor wandering souls, I'm thinking of starting a charity in aid of them... I'm sure people will be only too willing to donate as they are part of our rich tapestry of heritage and life in England would not be the same without them...

I work and my family have always and will always. I have never robbed, nor had or been related to anyone who is connected with Tarmac, fortune scams or pegs. Since over 95% of Gypsy folk or Travellers (with a capital T) are refused planning permission to build homes on land that they buy, and declined the Camping and caravanning license (required since the 1967 act), it is hard to imagine what option we have. Practical fair minded suggestions should be posted here. Ill-informed mis-judged racist hate remarks should not. You labour under the notion that the dumping and crime is tax avoiding is not equally common amongst the settled folk, you could not be more wrong. You seem to expect our ignorance. I have a first class honours degree in, and work in education, I am extremely sorry that there is such a shortage of education amongst these comments and can only hope that your children will not suffer such ignorance and lack of social conscience.

You flatter me - I have never been exceptional nor regarded as so. Maybe it is to do with the nature of the interaction and people's misinformed expectations of one another. Conflict leads to siege mentality behaviours - possibly due to fear and ignorance (on both sides) People under attack will always be defensive.

Billi I too have copies of the racist posts and they will be added to a list being monitored by a European Commission. Enoch also needs monitoring as his name has come up before and it may well be the case that as a persistent 'race hate troll' he could actually be a likely candidate for prosecution. Rights Campaigners are pushing for more prosecutions for this type of racism. The European Commission on Human Rights is backing this.

I cannot speak for all Gypsy people or Travellers but I am aware that parking up singly or in small groups is more vulnerable - perhaps a more open location within view is safer and enables the group support system that has by necessity become part of current Gypsy culture.
The old ways of independent travelling working and stopping welcomely on farmers land and verges no longer is an option either legally or practically due to prohibitive laws. However I have never experienced negative relationships as most folk I know tend to not stay where hostility is received. I have been aware over the years that vandalism and criminal acts are sometimes "staged" by others when travellers arrive in large groups which I would guess may be a clever insurance policy. Travellers/ Gypsies become labelled and accused as the assumed culprits which provides the grounds for the process that follows. I do not know your area it's families, community or issues, merely prefer that people see both sides rather than making assumptions. As far as I know you are attempting to see without blinkers. Most don't. Nice talking with you.

I have no idea why your post was removed it was simply the endlessly repeated word delete for a few foot of screen time!- No clue what it referred to: my post? the racist hatred posts? or a desire for ethnic cleansing ? to delete Travellers / Gypsies from society? I certainly did not complain about it since i did not understand your point.

When you get these sites, with or without permission, most seem to build walls round their pitches and make roads etc as you would find in settled communities, how can they still refer to themselves as Travellers if they don't actually travel? It appears to outsiders it is just a way to not have to pay council tax and other associated regs and laws etc.

As your earlier reply stated the old way of life has become less viable, with changing laws, less land and all the associated problems so maybe it's time for change. Traditional ways are dying out and changing today as they have for centuries for all of us, sometimes they have to be left behind by necessity, if not by choice. very sad but none-the-less true.

If it is time for a change then surely wider society should be able to get their head around the transition of cultures towards mutual acceptance being a long and optional process, otherwise we are merely discussing ethnic cleansing which is a different issue. Personally I do not consider where I live defines me - the customs of Romany/Traveller culture are to do with many,many other values besides nomadic lifestyle. Many of the settled communities wish us to keep moving, many want us "contained" in one designated place rather like a ghetto or camp.
