Travellers camp on Burnley farmer’s field

NEW CAMP Travellers park up their vehicles in Cliviger NEW CAMP Travellers park up their vehicles in Cliviger

TRAVELLERS arrived on farmland in Burnley yesterday in the face of protests from residents.

Police went to the land, belonging to Foxstones Farm, between Foxstones Lane and Red Lees Road in Cliviger.

But witnesses said they did not stop eight caravans and camper-vans setting up site.

Resident Tom O’Shea said: “About 15 vans and trailers and mobile homes turned up and at first about three or four got on the land.

"They cut chains and padlocks to get on to this field, which the police didn’t seem too concerned about.

"I was there and all the police did was put a car on the lane to stop them and put a van to block them.

"But they went further down the they lane and literally drove through a wooden gate to get in.

"The law is an absolute disgrace.

“They have turned round to the family that owns the farm and said you have got to get an injunction to have them moved.

"Why can’t the police just tell them to move on?”

Police are unable to remove the travellers without a legal order.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “We are aware of the situation and we are working and liaising with the landowner and offering advice.”

All the rights to the traveller's and non to the people that own the land or live nearby.

Use common sense - kick them off and sod the Courts!

A farmer will be able to get hold of a muck spreader!
Maybe a covering of cow muck would encourage the travellers to move on!!

i know these travellers are a nuisance to most folks, But they should have sites provided as long as they pay rent and tax and look after the sites properly as they do in other parts of the uk, Perhaps a site in Stoneyholme or Daneshouse area can be found,

Typical. The police are no longer fit for purpose.

I asked on another thread about this...does anyone know why we we're having this sudden influx of travellers in the local areas? Is there some sort of 'horse fair' or something planned somewhere because they seem incredibly reluctant to leave.

the Law regarding these people is unfit for purpose.
Every landowner should have a right to protect his property and remove those who trespass without having the need to spend thousands in court costs.
Theres have been reports of them camping on football and other sports pitches. If this be the case they should be charged with Criminal Damage, their vehicles should be checked and they don't have the correct documents which they won't have the vehicles should be seized.
These people know they are not wanted in most areas they turn up in,they travel freely around the country. If the law made it uncomfortable for them to do so they would stop.

If this happened in any other country the police would have arrested them all, seized their vehicles and if they resisted shot them!

Its not the Police`s fault, they have no power to move or arrest them. The blame lies with the European court of Human Rights! And our governments reluctance to take them on and make a law that prohibits `travellers` of making a home wherever they want. Cameron needs to get some backbone and stop the country being run from Brussels. Love the muck speader idea though!

'fraid you don't know Burnley better than me. Born, Bred & Raised in Burnley and still here.

The old Oswald St. gas works is defunct although the gas tank is still there. The site has been up for sale for years. I think your concept of 'nothing left' is perhaps based on a quick over-view from Google or the press because there are still plenty of good things around that either get ignored or conveniently forgotten in reports. Think Towneley, Pike Hill, Thompsons and Queen's Park, Ightenhill. Yes we have the blight spots such as Burnley Wood, Stoneyholme & Daneshouse but the first is having a lot of work done to it the other two must agree that they are nothing but ghettoes and practically no go areas for such as us, certainly not as pedestrians.

So as a Burnleyite albeit in exile don't be negative. I love S.W. Wales and have been there many, many times on business travelling around the Heads of the Valleys, Neath, Cardiff itself (I love the Castle), Swansea, Carmarthen, Saundersfoot, Caswell Bay, Tenby, St. Clear and so on. However, there are some real grot spots as well along the way. Don't join the Burnley Knockers it's all too easy - stay a Masher
