Lawyer in bid to become Burnley MP

A SOLICITOR from Cliviger is the latest canidate to throw his hat into the ring to become Burnley’s next MP.

Property lawyer Richard Rawsthorn, 59, will stand for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) in the 2010 General Election.

He will face Burnley council leader Coun Gordon Birtwistle, for the Liberal Democrats, and the Conservative’s Richard Ali.

Labour are currently deciding on whether they will select their candidate from an all-woman shortlist, following an appeal to the party’s national executive, and the British National Party is expected to field a candidate.

While Mr Rawsthorn, a partner in Manchester-based firm Lawsons, is realistic about his prospects of securing the seat, he is prepared for a battle.

He said: “This will be one of those seats which is highly unpredictable and we could have a lot of influence.

"Certainly I cannot remember Burnley having anything other than a Labour MP.

“But I know Kitty Ussher has not exactly distinguished herself over the expenses issue and she will not be standing.

“I live in Cliviger, have lived there all my life, as did my father and grandfather before me.

"I am a local candidate, not someone who has been parachuted in.”

And how will a UKIP MP help with Burnley's problems when its main focus is removing the UK from the EU - a most shortsighted notion. Does UKIP really think the UK could cut itself adrift from the EU and prosper, or do they want us to join up with the USA? Get real - our destiny lies within the EU that's why most of our trade is with it and why we can move freely within its borders and why millions of UK citizens live, work and study in other EU countries. The EU has been an overwhelming force for good despite some of its negative aspects, often exaggerated by the right wing press. It has certainly enabled me to spend my lifetime in a Europe largely at peace with itself and that in itself has been a great blessing.

As more and more candidates come forward the chances of Labour again representing Burnley loom more and more to the fore...
I bet Pritty Kitty, Kitty is kicking herself for standing down and making her family an excuse for not putting up again. Instead of declaring "it's a fair cop Mi'lord" she tried to hide behind her family when she thought there is no chance for Labour.

Eaten bread is soon forgotten Kitty and you should have blazened it out. Mind you I shall be voting for Mr. Brown, not Gordon but him with a gym down Stoneyholme.
