POLICE are cracking down on irresponsible dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets.
Briercliffe Neighbourhood Police Officers are acting after residents raised conce-rns about the health hazard at a recent PACT meeting.
Anyone found guilty of dog fouling, which is against the law, can be fined between £40 and £1,000.
PC Ian Thompson, comm-unity beat manager for Briercliffe, said: "It may seem like a trivial matter for the police to be dealing with to some people but it is high on the list of things that concern people within the community.
"It is the responsibility of the dog owner to ensure that the dog's mess is cleaned up."
The greatest risk to public health from dog faeces is toxocariasis, a disease that can cause liver complaints or, in some cases, visual impairment or blindness.
Residents can report offen-ders directly to the Environ-mental Health department at Burnley Council on 01282 425011, or to PC Ian Thompson on 07984 316855 and PCSO Lee Ingham on 07984 316821.

Another Rat line has been set up for the sneaks I see.
Most people clean up after their pets, if the council is so worried about the danger to our health, why not appoint a full time dog dirt official.
They have enough jobsworths working inside, let them send one of their workforce out for some healthy exercise.
He may come across some dog dirt.
