POLICE are cracking down on irresponsible dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets.

Briercliffe Neighbourhood Police Officers are acting after residents raised conce-rns about the health hazard at a recent PACT meeting.

Anyone found guilty of dog fouling, which is against the law, can be fined between £40 and £1,000.

PC Ian Thompson, comm-unity beat manager for Briercliffe, said: "It may seem like a trivial matter for the police to be dealing with to some people but it is high on the list of things that concern people within the community.

"It is the responsibility of the dog owner to ensure that the dog's mess is cleaned up."

The greatest risk to public health from dog faeces is toxocariasis, a disease that can cause liver complaints or, in some cases, visual impairment or blindness.

Residents can report offen-ders directly to the Environ-mental Health department at Burnley Council on 01282 425011, or to PC Ian Thompson on 07984 316855 and PCSO Lee Ingham on 07984 316821.

The police should be catching criminals, not chasing dog crap.
Another Rat line has been set up for the sneaks I see.
Most people clean up after their pets, if the council is so worried about the danger to our health, why not appoint a full time dog dirt official.
They have enough jobsworths working inside, let them send one of their workforce out for some healthy exercise.
He may come across some dog dirt.

Coming from Blackburn Mike I suspect you know nothing of the problem mentioned in this area, so why comment on it? I also find it extremely concerning that the tone of your comments infer that you support people allowing their pets to deffecate wherever they like.

As for suggesting the council should send people out to clean it up... well what can I say.... apart from people should stop being so LAZY and pick up their own animal's CR*P. If they don't then it should be collected for them and posted to their address for them to dispose of, how's that for a suggestion?

Although we need to remain courteous I don't really think you've got any place to comment mike. If you saw how much 'crap' you've constantly got to clean off your van, shoes, bikes etc after people take their dogs for walks down the farm lanes, and just let them 'crap' all over the place.

You shouldn't really be commenting on things you don't know about. It is a serious problem and people need to become more responsible. You wouldn't catch humans 'crapping' in the street now would you?

Dog dirt is a real issue where we live. Its good to see someone doing something abut it.
