Burnley fan’s day-to-day book on Premier League season

A VOW by a Burnley fan when his team won promotion at Wembley has led to him publishing a book detailing the joy and desperation of the club’s year in the Premier League.

Season In The Sun, has been written by Peter Haworth, 59, a lifelong Clarets fan from Briercliffe.

Peter’s day-by day account of Burnley’s year in the top flight is his attempt to capture the highs and lows, sprinkled with the humour of the fans, of those heady 12 months among the elite.

For Peter, who is married to Julie and attends matches with his 21-year-old daughter Stephanie, the book also marked 50 years as a fan.

He said: “I was eight when I went to my first match in 1959, the season Burnley became champions and I’ve been hooked ever since.

“Winning at Wembley in 2009 was so important for thousands of fans, especially for those of us who saw the club go close to extinction.

"I decided there and then to record each day’s events for the next year.”

Peter, who has worked in the weaving industry for more than 35 years and currently works WM Lawrence in Haslingden said the season provided enough drama to never leave him short of material.

Clarets legend Martin Dobson offered his help with the book and has written the foreword.

The first print run has already sold out at the Burnley club shop and new supplies are being printed.

The book is also on sale at the memorabilia stall in the market hall and at Badger Books.

A few points :
1. It was 9 months not 12.
2. What heady experiences : beating Man U for the first time since about 1967?; the rest of it was embarrassing for the club and the Premier League.
3. Burnley were for all practical purposes relegation fodder by the end of February.
4. The Coyle affair was one of the biggest managerial shambles in it for many years
5. Their presence in the Premoier League totally devalued it .
6. One season in the top flight in 35 years is something to keep quiet rather than boast about.
Is this destined to be another Orient in the illustrious history of Burnley FC?

Personally I think this is a good idea. I wont be buying the book, but it is right that Burnley and their fans should celebrate their season in the Premier and use the dissapointment of being relegated to get promoted.

Yawn!
Jockstrap, we knew it would be a hard season and it was. However, we have come out of it in good shape financially and on the pitch and I am still enjoying my football after 40 years of watching. The Premier League is rapidly becoming a bloated monster, run for the benefit of greedy agents, players and Sky. No one will convince me that Rover supporters are getting any more out of their football than we are, in fact I would say less. After all, what do they have? A dodgy looking position in the table and suffering lamp-it in the air hoofball which supporter are constantly moaning about. Never mind the rubbish on the Rovers posts that watching crap is ok so long as it is in the Premier League. And what is the only hope you have of changing this? Oh yes, yet another club sell-out to a mystery man of the East bringing more millions to pour into the accounts of players and agents who will all run away if things don't go right or a better offer comes along.
Now Jockstrap, go and look for a job that will keep you away from the LET.

There are a whole stack of rrespectable books about Rovers. They dont engage in this Cult of Mediocrity c***p and refect the clubs historical ranking based on robust research as 11th best in England.

Name one book that is about a fans view of following Blackburn (in recent years).
.
In comparison with players that are at clubs who have won the premiership name one player at Rovers who isn't mediocre.

Im not actually a Rovers fan but here goes : there are two books written by fans as well as the historical records. They are very dated though. Heres a few quality Rovers players:
Paul Robinson : 53 England caps and still one of he finest in the Premier League ;witness those saves the other night which earned Rovers a pouintv against Sunderland
Salgado : 51 Spain caps and 2 European Champions League medals : very solid Premier League defender
David Dunn : 10 goals from midfield last season and good ball player
Brett Emerton : Aussie World Cup player and good overall winger
Ryan Nelson : New Zealand captain and World Cup players : classy defender as his perormance against Italy showed.
Phil Jones : England youth, u19 and u21 player who at 19 is a Premier League regular and looks comfortable.

There are other i could name. Burnley have had 1 season in the last 35 in the top division and half of that period was in the Third and Fourth Divisions. Rovers have had 17 out of 19 in the Premier League since its foundation in 1992. I keep telling you : stop getting into arguments when you follow a club with a modern history like that.
Its embarrassing and painful, quite frankly

Robinson - 4th choice for England, spat dummy out and has refused to be in squad - mediocre in comparison to Van dar Sarr and Cech
.
Salgado - last played for Spain in 2006 released on a free by Real Madrid - mediocre in comparison to Ivanovic et al.
.
David Dunn - 1 cap for England in 2002 - not exactly Paul Scholes/Essian/Zhirk
ov etc
.
Emerton - 16 goals in 266 apps wouldn't even get in the squad of a top 4 team.
.
Nelson - plays for New Zealand again not really in the same class as any central defender such as Terry, Ferdinand, etc
.
Phil Jones - good prospect but not even in the same league as Gary Cahill!
.
Once again Game Set and Match. When are you going to learn Tetley! Every time I have to correct you - I'm starting to feel like your teacher - "must do better"!

You are the one that keeps comparing Rovers to Burnley - i just don't understand why?

Yes but they are good quality players with real pedigree. They are not Bashley, Scunthorpe, Forest Green Rovers trained. They are proven Premier League players with international pedigree. When was the last time Burnley had one of those ?: Martin Dobson in 1974. Stop getting in debates when you follow a club with such a poor history for over 30 years.

the premiership was a total joke the price of everything from parking to pies went up, too watch matches that were no better than the championship.The amout of cheating and whinging on the pitch was unbelievable .I got rid of my season ticket half way through because of the price rises and the boring boring games .The so called superstars were no big deal it put me off football;the premier lague must be the most corrupt sport in the UK Good riddance.

In comparison to the best players in the Premier league they are, at best, mediocre journymen who wouldn,t get into a top team. They are either past it (Salgado) or never up to it (Emerton etc).
