POLICE chiefs will not face charges after an East Lancashire PC was shot dead by a colleague.

The Crown Prosecution Service today said it would not prosecute Greater Manchester Police’s leading officers after the death of Ian Terry, 32, last June.

Dad-of-two PC Terry, of Red Spar Road, Briercliffe, was shot in the chest by a fellow GMP officer during a training exercise.

CPS lawyers said there was insufficient evidence to charge GMP bosses with corporate man-slaughter.

They also decided the officer who killed PC Terry should not face a charge of gross negligence manslaughter and there was not enough evidence to pursue misconduct in public office charges against other officers present.

Mark Auty, from the CPS said: “The family of Ian Terry has been informed of my decision.

“I have extended my condolences to them and offered to meet with them.”

Although GMP will not face criminal charges over PC Terry’s death, it could still be prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive.

A separate probe by the Independent Police Complaints Comm-ission has been submitted to the HSE and CPS but not made public.

Chief Supt Dave Keller, head of GMP’s professional standards branch, said: “Our thoughts remain with his family as they continue to come to terms with his death.”
