Wife of terminally ill Burnley man nominated for award

THE WIFE of a terminally-ill Burnley dad has been nominated for a carer of the year award.

Tammy Cooper, 24, had been nominated for the award after becoming a full-time carer for husband Tom, 25.

He was diagnosed with a rare form of throat cancer, Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, last October.

The couple tied the knot at Towneley Hall, in April, after the community raised £20,000 for the wedding to go ahead, and over 100 guests attended the emotional ceremony.

Tammy quit her day job as a nail technician to be Tom’s full-time carer after doctors said they did not know how long he had left.

She said: “It means so much to us and I am really pleased about it, it is a fantastic feeling to be nominated.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do it though without the support I have had from friends and family.”

In July Tammy took part in the Pendleside Hospice Midnight Walk after they had offered the couple support and raised hundreds of pounds for the hospice.

The couple’s oldest daughter Tienna, four, just missed out on the child of courage award. They also have a two-year-old daughter Ziani.

Tammy said: “She is almost five and old enough to realise something is not quite right, so she gets very upset and asks a lot of questions.”

The carer of the year award is part of the radio station 2BR’s local hero awards and the ceremony takes place on Thursday September 27.
