Pendle MP calls for A&E title to return to Burnley Hospital

PENDLE MP Andrew Stephenson has weighed into the fight to return the Accident and Emergency title to Burnley’s Urgent Care Centre.

Health campaigners have been calling for the government to look into the case, after a review revealed that the Urgent Care Centre (UCC) was performing many duties that are associated with an A&E department.

Burnley General’s A&E department was closed in November 2007, with services moved to Blackburn, and a UCC was set up in its place to deal with less serious cases.

The Government has admitted that the situation is 'confusing' for patients, and for the past two years, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has been looking into the matter as part of a national nomenclature review.

Now Mr Stephenson has written to the Department of Health, stating his desire for the situation to be resolved quickly.

The Rt Hon Simon Burns MP, Minister of State for Health, replied: “We realise that the current nomenclature and urgent and emergency care system is confusing and that some patients struggle to understand which services are provided at which facilities and where they should go to access the service they require.

“As your constituent may know, one of the recommendations made in the report into the functioning of the urgent care centre at the Burnley General Hospital was that emergency care provision at Burnley should be named in line with the national work, which involves standardising the terms of emergency care.

“It is of course important that this review is completed quickly, but it is also vital that appropriate levels of scrutiny and planning are in place to maximise the benefits for patients.”

Mr Stephenson said: “It is clear that ministers are still working on this issue and share my determination to come to a conclusion soon, but they are also keen to ensure that this is done right.

“I will keep up pressure on ministers, however a rushed conclusion could cause even more confusion than currently exists.”

Just because you call it an 'Accident and Emergency' doesn't make it one! Burnley General does not have the Medical Assessment unit anymore so any serious cases will be transferred to Blackburn. Burnley General is a shell, with half the wards either lying empty or being used to store equipment. Once the Open Acute Mental Health site has gone this government and the previous government will have achieved their goal by making the N.H.S in Burnley obsolete.

It would seem the Burnley and Pendle politicians realise their seats are in
A & E Hence the urgency in changing the name. Sorry folks you can run but you can't hide, You will be called to account for your treachery. The Tories and Lib Dems have committed a fatal error in trying to privatise the NHS. They have done damage but they have under estimated the feelings of people of all political colours. The Doctors who jumped into bed with the politicians should consider their future as we don't need people like that in the NHS.

Has he, by Jove? Well, what's stopping him from making a decision, then? Or has one, as first poster suggests, already been made?

Unfortunately Labour would be no better, after all they were the ones who got rid of A&E at Burnley in the first place.

I would like to know why these MPs are not shouting out about the closure of mental health wards especially the proposed closure of ward 19 at BGH.

Dementia patients are being shipped like cattle all over Lancashire because of ward closures . How will their spouses / families get to these places to visit their loved ones ??
It is a disgrace that local MPs have closed their eyes to .

If you feel so strongly about it, why don't you become an MP yourself in order to affect change in something you feel so strongly about rather than sitting there taking out your rage on a computer screen?

If MP is too big an ask (no criticism, it would be for most of us), then why not a councillor? That's easy to do.

and while where at it why don't we move the baby unit back to blackburn so we don't have to go to burnley and burnley can have their A n E back so the waiting times at blackburn hospital will go down

Sadly it is true that a bunch of pocket lining traitors, masquerading as Labour politicians tried to merge the areas Hospitals into one super Hospital. We all knew it was doomed to failure. As for those who continue to push the cost argument, The answer is simple. People want the NHS and are prepared to pay for it. We don't need the poor management we have suffered up to now. As for doctors running the NHS I would suggest they stick to doing what they trained to do. Remember patients are the purpose of your work and not the cause.

There already is a baby unit at Blackburn, called the Blackburn Birth Centre ! LWNC in Burnley is one of the best things that could have happened to Burnley General Hospital, whether A&E came or not. With the new UCC on the horizon, things are getting better.

They have a baby unit in Blackburn and the only time anyone from Blackburn would have to travel to LWNC at Burnley General Hospital would be if they were having a problematic or difficult birth '1988blackburner' you need to open your eyes and look around you ,see what your town has to offer in the way of medical treatment and you will find it is far more than what Burnley General has to offer , and as for changing the name of the UCC to A&E it is a non starter and will never return to being an Accident & Emergency dept, when it was planned to downgrade if enough people had stamped their feet and made a stand do you really think this would have happened but oh no we had Kitty Husher who to be honest did not give a flying fig about this town after she won her votes.

We pay for the present MPs to do their job "but the don't " so why should i do it for them .
I wrote to Gordon Birtwistle and Jack Straw . Straw never replied Birtwistle got a lackey to reply.

Yet when it is physical care that is going wrong they have a bit of a shout and mental health takes a back seat as usual.

If i were an MP i would fight this and also the HRA
Immigration .
Islamification .
etc etc .
All things the past and present governments have ignored .

MP Andrew Stephenson can call the Urgent Care Centre 'Moonbase Alpha' for all I care, but it ain't ever going to be an A&E dept. So let's call it just what it is (an Urgent Care Centre) and don't try to hoodwink the electorate because we're not as gullible as our MPs are trying to make out!

Hi mavrick. Have you read about Cherie Blairs latest business venture.
She wants to put private clinics in Sainsburys.

I fully agree with you. No doubt we will soon be getting our Nu Labour candidates going on about how the coalition don't care about the NHS whilst totally ignoring the fact that they are even worse.
