Boys arrested after fire in former Burnley school

TWO 15-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of burglary after a fire in a derelict school.

Fire crews were called to the dilapidated former Habergham High School, in Kiddrow Lane, Burnley, shortly before 7pm on Friday. A pair of curtains had been set alight, underneath the stage in the assembly hall.

Crew manager Rick Courtney, from Burnley Fire Station, said: “This incident could potentially have been life-threatening for the young lads involved.

“They had entered a boarded-up, derelict building, and curtains and rubbish had been set on fire in a confined space, in the dark. If they had struggled to get out, this situation could easily have escalated.

“Like I told the boys at the scene, they not only put themselves at risk, but my firefighters too.”

Fire crews contained the fire quickly, and prevented it spreading. Police arrested two teenagers as they left the building. They have been released on police bail.

The school closed in 2006.
