Burnley drunk man called PC ‘immigrant’

A DRUNK man who racially abused a police officer was not long out of jail, Burnley magistrates heard.

The court was told how Luke Craig, 22, had sworn at the officer, called her a bitch and said: “Wait ‘til I see you. You will get it,” after he was arrested on May 6.

The defendant, said to have smelled of drink and to have been unsteady on his feet, was told to calm down by the officer, but twice called her an ‘immigrant’.

Craig, of Padgate Place, Burnley, admitted racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress.

He was fined £90, with £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Charlotte Crane, prosecuting, said Craig’s language was “rather choice and disgraceful”.

The defendant had been released from an eight month prison term on April 18.

David Lawson, for Craig, said there was no justification for what he said and he understood that.

It was no excuse, but he had been extremely drunk.

The solicitor added: “He hangs his head in shame.”
