UNIVERSITY courses offered in Burnley are under-subscribed.

And that’s because of a lack of student accommodation, claim developers.

New programmes which are being promoted by the University of Central Lancashire at their Princess Way campus, are not reaching their potential because of a shortage of affordable rooms, say the supporters of a fledgling ‘student village’.

Proposals have been unveiled to transform the former Shop Direct premises, in Kingsway, into a mecca for undergraduates.

More than 130 would be housed in Kingsway House with shops and offices as part of the East Lancashire Regeneration Ltd (ELRL) scheme.

Another 96 would then be accommodated in a newly-constructed five-storey block, beside Active Way.

And at the other end of the main building, beside the access ramp to Burnley Open Market, could be a four-storey block, with a new pub and 32 extra student beds.

Alan Kinder who is, ELRL’s managing director, said: “Essentially the university has been successful in developing a new range of courses.

“But the occupancy have not been as high as anticipated due to the scarcity of appropriate accommodation locally.

“At the present time UCLan are housing approximately 40 full-time students in halls of residence, close to the Preston Campus, and are incurring the cost of transporting students on a daily basis.”

Talks have taken place with university bosses, added Mr Kinder.

And they appeared keen for the development to proceed, so courses could be marketed to more students across the UK and internationally.

Mr Kinder is also hopeful that some of the students, attracted to the new University College of Football Business at Turf Moor, could be based in the new ‘halls’.

The new venture, however, wouldn’t affect the existing Littlewowods Cle- ance Store, which is located on the ground floor of Kingsway House.
