Clampdown on Euro 2012 violence in Burnley
12:50pm Friday 15th June 2012 in Burnley
A CAMPAIGN to clamp down on domestic violence during Euro 2012 has been launched by Burnley Community Partnership.
Evidence suggests there is an increase in domestic violence during football tournaments and the campaign urges victims not to suffer in silence.
The countywide Safer Lancashire ‘handled with care’ campaign aims to highlight the impact domestic abuse can have on women and children and encourages victims to get help.
Louise Howorth, Burnley domestic violence co-ordinator, said: “During the 2010 World Cup campaign, Burnley SafeNet domestic violence helpline had a significant rise in calls from victims, seeing a 38 per cent increase in calls for support. In contrast, police callouts to domestic violence incidents in Burnley did not increase.
“This increase in calls to SafeNet may have been a direct result of the awareness-raising work during the campaign, which encouraged victims to seek help sooner. We are aiming to have the same success during the Euro 2012.”
To talk to a support worker, call or text Burnley Safenet helpline on 07866 510728 between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Drunken abusers should be arrested, banged up until they sober up, then conditionally bailed, where they are banned from drinking and watching football.
And if perchance the papers got a little lost in the system, so that it took say, 3 months, to come to court, am sure that the interests of justice would be well served.

You'd see a drop in domestic violence then, not the inevitable increase you get with the booze.
Hopefully anyway, as I'm certainly on the ale myself watching the match!

Not that I'm suggesting anything here but it makes you wonder, doesn't it. How many Lorena Bobbits are out there, being abused on a regular basis.
