A TALENTED swimmer will be making a splash on the international stage after she made the final cut to compete with team GB.

Kerry Holding, 16, has been chosen to represent the nation at this year’s World Catholic Schools’ Student Games 2012 in Malta.

The Blessed Trinity RC College, Burnley, pupil was chosen after an outstanding year and will join more than 1,000 star students taking part in the games. Kerry, who trains with the Burnley Bobcats, said: “I was really excited when I was told I had been picked to team representing the UK.

“After I was put on the reserve list last year, it was my aim to get onto the team.

“I would love to try to get to the Olympics.”

Kerry is waiting to be told what event she will be competing in but she said it could be the freestyle or the 100-metre butterfly.

She began swimming while she was a pupil at St Mary’s RC Primary School, Bacup. She trained in Haslingden for three years.

The Bacup teenager said: “I just had lessons in primary school and I really liked it and I carried on learning.”

Kerry, who will compete on July 9, trains seven days a week with four morning sessions followed by two hours, three times a week.

She said: “Everyone at Burnley Bobcats was over the moon that I got into the competition.”

Blessed Trinity assistant headteacher Andy Montrose said: “Kerry has, over the years, done a lot for the school. Swimming is a competitive individual sport. She’s done things for the school through swimming from year eight onwards.

“She has supported the community of the school through doing the sport she loves. She is a model pupil. She is a good bright girl and works hard. We are all proud of her.”
