NURSES at Burnley General Hospital's axed Deerplay ward are having to reapply for their jobs, it has been revealed.
A UNISON organiser said members were 'incensed' over the changes to their shift patterns, pay and where they work.
Staff were told the changes will take effect in December when the ward is transferred to Royal Blackburn Hospital.
A children's minor illness unit will be provided in Burnley, open from 10am to 8pm from Monday to Friday, and from 12noon until 8pm at the weekend.
However, no child will be admitted after 6pm and sick youngsters who need to stay in hospital overnight will have to travel to Blackburn.
UNISON said nurses would drop from Band 6, a specialised qualified role, to Band 5, a non-specialised normal nursing role.
Tim Ellis, regional organiser for the union, said: “Staff are absolutely up in arms about this. They are incensed.
“It is clearly contained within the proposals a reduction in the care and support which the nursing and healthcare staff are to provide to these ill children, and that is a major concern to the staff involved.
“I will be very surprised if the staff want to accept these proposals.”
Bosses stressed suitable jobs will be found for all staff affected by the changes.
Simon Hill, associate medical director for the family care division at the trust, said the majority of staff were 'excited' about the move, designed to provide 'the best possible outcomes for patients by making the most of our facilities'.
Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle said: “It's ridiculous. The health service is ring-fenced so the Government is not asking for cutbacks on frontline staff in grades or numbers, it is asking for efficiencies in backroom staff.
“I am surprised staff are being downgraded to do the same job.”

I wonder what would happen if none of the nurses reapplied for their jobs? maybe the accountants who are forcing this move will come and do the jobs on the wards. This is a disgrace to the health service and the people who need it.i am afraid the nhs is being dismantled by the libcon government.
I hope the blinkered fools who thought a coalition was a good idea should repent at leisure.
Gordon Birtwistle hang your head in shame and resign, you have misled the people on nhs issues from the start.

Approximately 3 yrs ago I had to reapply for my band 7 post, I did it & got the job 4 other people where unsuccessful & rebanded as a band 6. But these nurses still do the same job but over the years, I know of a physio who voluntary stepped down to a 7 from an 8 to help her collegues, if the TRUST bring in this regrading across the board to save money she'll have to reapply for her job & prob end up with a band 6. The trust finished a 1/3 of it's managers & admin staff 3 yrs ago & they'd paid staff off from in redunancies & liquidised their posts, within months they'd re-employed staff to these posts!
In a cost-saving move, the East Lancs NHS is merging with Central Lancs (Preston area) and in doing so, the 72 Band 8 managerial level nurses are to be reduced to 24! The Band 8s will be forced to be 'demoted' to Band 7s which will mean less pay. The work still needs to be done of course so 24 people will be doing the work currently undertaken by 72. The standard of work will be affected drastically. Staff morale and state of health will be impacted upon to an extent that the patients will be adversely badly affected. Already sorry you voted Tory?

I think he wears Red Longjohns, sleeps in red pyjamas, has red sheets, pillowcases and blankets. Probably has a red Teddy Bear which has a hat with hammer and sickle on it (or perhaps a red star). I presume the Teddy will be called either Karl or Marx, maybe even Mao. His favourite bedtime reading is probably "Thoughts of Chairman Mao" of possibly " The Communist Manifesto"

It's not a new thing or Condem thing, the trust & management have been wasting money for yrs & when it should be them being sacked off they'd rather manipulate the figures by cutting frontline staffs achievements of working hard to gain promotion. The only way forward is by restructuring & going back to the way I learnt to train, Matron, sister, nurse, auxiliary & everyone EVERYONE! Got their hands dirty!
