Absent Burnley Conservative councillor could be expelled

A TORY councillor is facing possible expulsion from his town hall duties after failing to attend a meeting for almost six months.

Coun Jonathan Gilbert, who represents Whittlefield-with-Ightenhill ward for the Conservatives, has not been present at a Burnley authority meeting since last August’s full council gathering.

But it is understood by the Lancashire Telegraph that the councillor, who lives in Ightenhill, will attend Wednesday’s full council meeting to offer an explanation.

He is a member of the borough’s development control committee, sits on the economic scrutiny panel, and Burnley Community Safety Partnership’s steering group.

If Coun Gilbert does not show up, then he could be expelled from the council, due to non-attendance, forcing a by-election.

The poll could be held within the next month, or delayed until the full round of borough elections in May.

The councillor, who works for Lancashire Education Consortium, had an 82per cent attendance record in 2008-09, and has been on the council for four years.

At the weekend he said he would not be making a comment ahead of the meeting.

I bet he did not forget where the Town Hall was when it came to sending in his expenses claim.

Yeah... seems like some think you should have your councillor monthly pay.. and do nothing in return for it.

Pity his bullying and arrogant attitude had been absent to.

Well said Captain BB. My mother lives near Coun Gilbert and he is a waste of space. A total odd ball and yes he is arrogant, rude and a classical example of a bully. I can't understand why the Tory party see hime a a good representative? They need to get rid of him. Seems he's only put up for Council to get a bit of extra cash and to put 'Councillor' on his CV.

Development control is planning, economic scrutiny looks at finance and community safety partnership is the council, the police and the various neighbourhood groups working together to make the community safer.

development control committee

This is what used to be known as the Planning Committee and makes some decisions about changes of use for land and/or buildings, extensions, and the like, although most are delegated to officers.

economic scrutiny panel

The article is referring to the Economy Scrutiny Committee, which deals with jobs and some aspects of Burnley's regeneration. (It does not deal with Finance: that is either the Finance and Performance Scrutiny Panel or the Better Services Scrutiny Committee.)

community safety partnership

As Midas says, that's the council, the police and the various neighbourhood groups working together to make the community safer

I think he has 'Small Man Syndrome'. Like a chihuahua he does a lot of yapping but isn't much use, and is quite comfortable letting someone else do the carrying whilst he sits nice in their handbag.

I heard that nothing was said at the council meeting on Wednesday night, so he attended just one meeting and gets paid the councillors monthly pay.. hell we should all sign up to be a councillor..
