New Burnley mosque 'will be completed'

A COMMUNITY leader has insisted a mosque will be completed – despite the credit crunch.

Residents in Daneshouse, Burnley, have raised more than £500,000 towards the £1m needed to finish the mosque, off Burns Street.

Work on the huge structure began in 2003 and is reliant on donations from the local community.

But, despite the credit crunch affecting major building schemes and the recession hitting people’s pockets, the mosque should still be completed by 2011, according to the man leading the development.

Project co-ordinator Mozaquir Ali said: “The whole deve-lopment depends on donations from the local community but since we started we have come from derelict land to what we’ve got now and we have raised more than £500,000.

“We have come a long way but these things take time. It is a deprived area and we have done well considering.

“I am cautiously optimistic because of the recession and with people having less cash, but the residents round here are proud of their mosque and they are looking forward to it being ready.”

Last week, a massive £100,000 dome was lifted on to the mosque as residents gathered to watch.

And people living in Belford Street, which backs on to the new mosque, were positive about the landmark devel-opment.

Mohammed Alam, 26, said: “At the moment I go to a mosque up the street but this bigger one will be better for the community.”

Sohail Rahman, 20, added: “I think the new mosque is mostly a good thing, although sometimes it is a bad thing because the construction work disturbs our satellite dish!

“But having said that, I will still use it when it opens. A mosque is a mosque and it doesn’t matter where you go.”

This building really does seemed to have stired up a lot of feeling locally and I have to admit I haven;t yet heard anything supportive said by anyone.

It does make you wonder how planning permission is granted for something that looks so out of place on Burnley's skyline.

Its not freedom of speech, its offensive to anyone with any religious belief, in fact, its offensive to anyone with any social decency!

where the hell has my comment gone. you say anthing thats to do with muslims and your post gets deleted. all i said was this community can raise a million quid from their pockets for something that doesnt even fit with our culture and looks unsightly , yet let their home drop to pieces and sit back and wait for elevate to do em up.

It is freedom of speech. I find it offensive to have to look at an eyesore that does not fit in with our local area, which is a northern mill town not downtown Bombay

The Telegraph have freedom to print what they want.

I'd delete most of the racist rubbish on this site. you lot are a disgrace to the region and humanity in general.

The paper doesn't want to incite racial hatred, which is what you're doing. It's against the law, but that's something you clearly don't understand.

Northen mill town, what decade are you living in? Bombay!!! Don't make me laugh, Mumbai is in India, a nation with only a 12% Muslim population, you ignorant twunt.

So this monstrosity will not be completed for another 2 years it should never have begun,8 bloody years to build this blot on the burnley skyline, it looks absolutly ridiculous and way way too big ,no way should buildings like this be allowed planning permission especially when the full funding to complete it is not in place.Mind you normal rules dont seem to apply to the muslim community do they?.PS £100000 for that dome they must have seen you coming .

How many of those saps in the picture are working i wonder?.The muslim community needs to GET A LIFE and do something constructive with there spare time instead of praying and watching plastic domes being erected.SAD OLD GITS.

A mosque is being built while churches are being turned into night clubs... that to me shows the way our civilisation is going. Forget the preachers of hate and think of all the people who follow the strict rules of their religion. Have you noticed how polite and respectful members of the Asiuan community are when you meet them in our shops as opposed to the sullen assistants who probably have never seen inside a church?

spot on OldTimer, perhaps Judge1 et al would be better off going to Church every Sunday rather than spouting their bile on these threads.

Exactly what is the Burnley skyline anyway?

I think they just mean the view of Burnley from the sky, not 100% sure.

Spot on lads, judge1 has proved himself to be detestable. I'm proud of Burnley, it's a town with bags of character and a rich history, but comments like his are just an embarrassment.

Sure, we can't build too many mosques, as we can't afford too many buildings in general, but this was clearly necessary - good on them, it's been raised through local donations and that probably means a lot of hard work!!!

Supersub,Midas maybe you can enlighten me on any positive benifits that the muslim community of burnley has had on this town.I have to admit i cannot think of any .

1. Employment - much needed after WWII, hence the reason our Govt. set up the immigration plan to bring people from Pakistan to the North West.

2. Diversity - In a region with very few different cultures, immigration aided awareness and increased knowledge of our understanding of the world, it's different races and religions.

3. Cuisine - The melting pot of foodstuffs in the UK is now exceptional; Mexican, Italian, Chinese and of course the curry - where would the weekend be without it!

judge1 I rest my case.

Judge1,Earth, Your comments remind me of what my grandmother experienced when she came to this country from Ireland in the late 1800's. Asked what had Ireland done for this country she was able to point out many things mainly those being involved with the construction industry, canals and railways come to mind. The families of many of those who have arrived in this country at the later part of the last century have brought medical skills and nursing along with many other contributions that will come from their children.
Time and people move on.

willybob,

It's a terrible shame when I hear stories like yours. Insults are traded from both sides, mainly because of what children pick up from their parents. Sometimes this is due to personal experience, other times ignorance.

People are people. All around the world there are lovely folk, but equally nasty ones. It doesn't matter where you go in the world.

For the record, I have lived in several different places in the North West, some have been largely asian communities, others, like Mellor, are the opposite but could do with an injection of multiculturalism to prevent ignorance.

But what hurts most about your comment is that I can't change what you have experienced yet you have judged me.

I am currently experiencing racism against me from my asian girlfriend's family and so I have more reason than most to share the hatred I read on here every day.

So why do I defend the asian communities in the UK? I could be pretentious and say a good education, or working in diverse cities, but if anyone wants to see the light and find objectivity - go to India, it's an amazing experience.

Head in the sand? With qualifications in Politics at almost every level, including specialising in the Arab-Israeli conflict I know more about the sand than most around here!!!

Tolerance is the only way.

supersub, Mellor,
Well put, sir, these columns need comments like yours to make up for the expressions of the unenlightened.
Like you I have experienced conflict nearer home in Northern Ireland. In 1968 it was frightening to see neighbour turn against neighbour and see houses burnt to the ground through biggots and the uneducated in life cause all that mayhem.

How ridiculous and embarassing that some such as Judge1 & willybob still rear their ugly heads to show such intolerance, hatred and franly, ignorance...go educate yourself instead of watching trisha on daytime tv!

The mosque seems to have been raised with donations not tax payers money so we should not really be qualified to comment in respect of the project.

supersub says...
3:24pm Thu 7 May 09

Wow it sounds you have definitely experienced more than most Old Timer, a lot more serious conflict than me.

I hope we don't see anything like what happened in NI occurring in Lancashire. Cheers for the kind words, I'd nearly lost faith in humanity altogether!
