FOOD being cooked on a stove caused damage to a kitchen after it caught fire.

Crews from Burnley were called to Foxcroft in Burnley at around 6.30pm on Friday after food that was cooking on a hob had caught fire.

A Burnley fire station spokesman said the oven was destroyed following the fire.

He said: "The fire had taken hold of the oven, however the occupier had thought quickly and applied wet towels to the area to help reduce the impact.

"There was smoke damaged to the other units in the the kitchen, such as cupboards etc.

"There was smoke damage caused to other rooms of the house as well.

"However because of the owner's quick thinking any serious damage to the house was prevented.

"There was no injuries and the majority of the fire was put out when we arrived.

"We used ventilation equipment to make sure any remaining smoke was removed and out of the house."

This comes as more than 500 cooking fires took place in Lancashire last year.

The fire services advises all plans to be taken off heat or the heat turned down if you are distracted or called away from the cooker.

If taking drugs or alcohol, it is advised to get a takeaway or make something cold.

Pans with oil should not be more than one third full.

If a pan catches fire, water should not be thrown over it and caution should be taken when wearing loose clothing near open flames or heat.
