A COUNCIL which has been awarded White Ribbon status is being encouraged to recruit staff to 'end male violence amongst women' across the borough.

Burnley councillor Lubna Khan has put a motion forward to elected members at Burnley's next full council meeting to take on the 'White Ribbon pledge' by themselves promoting the stamping out of violence and aggression against women in UK society.

White Ribbon UK was founded in 2007 to 'end male violence against women' by engaging with men in calling out violent, bullying behaviour among their peers, and spreading a message of equality and respect.

The council said it "welcomes" the White Ribbon status that was awarded to them by the national group and now they want to take action in promoting the message.

Cllr Khan said she wants to recruit and train ambassadors and champions from within its members and staff to carry out this work.

The motion, which has been seconded by Burnley councillor Ida Carmichael, will be discussed by councillors at Burnley Council's full council meeting at Burnley Town Hall tomorrow from 7pm.
