A COUNCILLOR was yesterday suspended from the Labour Party nationally and locally over alleged anti-Semitism.

Rossendale councillor for Whitewell Pam Bromley now faces possible expulsion as leader Jeremy Corbyn faces criticism over his lack of action against anti-Jewish sentiments.

She was initially reported to the Compliance Unit of Labour’s National Executive for allegedly anti-Semitic social media posts.

Yesterday, Cllr Bromley’s Labour Party membership was officially ‘suspended pending investigation’ closely followed by similar measures by the Rossendale and Darwen party and borough council Labour group.

In May 2016, Blackburn with Darwen’s Cllr Salim Mulla and Burnley’s Shah Hussain were both suspended by Labour over alleged anti-Jewish posts. After an investigation both were cleared and reinstated.

Cllr Bromley is accused of an anti-Semitic social media comment which she followed up with a second Facebook post saying: “Some time back I got hammered for posting an anti-Rothschild meme. However here they are again.

“We must remember that Rothschilds are a powerful family (like the Medicis) and represent capitalism and big business - even if the Nazis DID use the activities of the Rothschilds in their anti-Semitic propaganda. We must not obscure the truth with the need to be tactful.”

Cllr Bromley said: “No comment. I am seeking legal advice.”

Rossendale and Darwen Conservative MP Jake Berry said: “This shows that the national crisis over anti-Semitism which is engulfing the Labour party is alive in Rossendale.”

In emails Cllr Bromley has said: “I am not prepared to cease from criticising the rabid right-wing Israeli government for their inhumane and cruel treatment of the Palestinian people. This is in no way a criticism of their Jewishness.”

A Labour Party spokeswoman confirmed Cllr Bromley had been suspended, adding: “The Labour Party is committed to challenging and campaigning against anti-Semitism in all its forms. All complaints of anti-Semitism are taken extremely seriously and are fully investigated”

Cllr Bromley has claimed there is a campaign against Jeremy Corbyn on the issue.
