A SPECIAL dinner has been held to bid farewell to the ‘people’s priest.’

Canon David Lupton and his sister Barbara were treated to a three-course meal in the James Hargreaves suite in the stands at Turf Moor in Burnley.

The occasion was organised as a sign of appreciation for the 33 years the priest has spent at the church of St James the Less in Rawtenstall.

The meal was followed by a programme of entertainment including a performance from Grace O’Malley, a graduate of Chetham’s School of Music, who is now undergoing training as an opera singer.

Following Grace’s ‘spellbinding’ performance, guests were treated to a routine by the St James the Less Irish Dancers, who put on ‘a truly spectacular display of footwork and athleticism.’

Fr David, as he prefers to be known, was joined by 430 parishioners and friends of the parish at the occasion.

Speaking about Fr David, David Pilling said: “Fr John was fortunate enough to work closely alongside his family in his work, with his sister Barbara living with him in the presbytery, always offering him much appreciated help and support.

“When their departure was announced two parishioners, Phil Barnes and Gerard Cahill, got together to organise a farewell dinner to enable the parishioners to show their appreciation for the many kindnesses Fr David and Barbara have shown over the years.”

The Bishop of Salford, Bishop John Arnold, also attended the evening of fun.

Fr David’s retirement at the end February will mark his 51st year as a priest.

“He was popular with all and had a special affinity for the sick and elderly,” continued Mr Pilling.

As a keen football fan, the dinner was arranged at the home of Fr David’s favourite team, Burnley FC.

Speaking about the evening, Mr Pilling said “Everyone left happy and uplifted.”
