A PUMP track could be set to come to a popular park which would be the next stage of a £30,000 improvement plan.

Plans are being drawn up to create a 'pump track' for cycling as part of wider improvements at Calder Park as Burnley Council continues working with residents to support their campaign to improve the park.

Council officers are meeting to discuss the design for a pump track as part of the next phase of the redevelopment of this park which is located off Pendle Way in Ightenhill, adjacent to the River Calder.

Campaigners are working to raise the £15,000 needed to fund the track and are hoping for help from local businesses.

Kirsty Carter, chair of the Friends group, said: “The pump track at Padiham has been a great success and really popular. We’re hoping to create something similar at Calder Park to provide more things for teenagers to do.

“The designs are just being drawn up so we’ve not got a firm cost but it’s expected to be around £15,000 and we’re looking at ways of raising the money to fund it.

“Any help will be very much appreciated and will help boost the local community.

“The improvements that have already been made have made a real difference. We’ve noticed more people using the play area, even though it’s been winter when it’s usually a bit quieter.

“One local mum said her daughter had been down the park for the first time in ages and thought it was fantastic. We’re grateful to everyone, including the council, for all their support.”

The Friends of Calder Park received a £10,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund – Awards for All and £3,700 from councillors’ ward opportunities funds to pay for new and exciting play equipment, including a zip-line, cantilever swing and a roundabout.

The council is working with the group as part of the authority’s borough-wide green space strategy.

Cllr John Harbour, the council’s executive member for housing and environment, said: “The council has worked closely with the Friends group and local people to create a wonderful play area that is already being very well used. The next step is to try and provide something for older children by creating a pump track. The challenge now is to find the funds to make this a reality.”
