FAMILIES braved the snow to raise money for a hospice.

Rotary Club of Padiham and Pendleside Hospice joined forces to host their fourth Winter Wander on Saturday.

The event saw families from across East Lancashire don Santa suits to tackle a three mile walk around Padiham to raise money for Pendleside Hospice.

The families were doing the walk in memory of or on behalf of a loved one who had been cared for by the hospice.

Jackie Johnstone and her family completed the walk in memory of her father-in-law, Brian Waller.

Mr Waller died in September and had received care from the hospice.

The group of 16 from Haslingden, who called themselves The Wallabies, said they were determined to finish the walk no matter how long it took.

Ms Johnstone said: “We are doing it for my father-in-law who passed away in September.

“He was looked after at Pendle Hospice and could not have asked for better care.

“We aren’t bothered how long it takes us.

“The aim is to just get it done for Brian.

“He would have loved this, he would have been here laughing his head off.”

The 3 mile walk began at Shuttleworth College in Padiham.

The route was martialled by elves who were giving out treats to younger participants.

Event organiser and past Rotary president Anthony Briggs said the atmosphere was 'wonderful', although he would have liked to see more people taking part.

He said: “I organised the first Winter Wander in 2013.

“It’s a brilliant event.

“It’s always popular, I think people love the dressing up element of it and it’s a wonderful site to see lots of Santa’s wandering round town.

“The atmosphere has been wonderful, but it would have been nice to have a few more people taking part.”
