PLANS have been drawn up to turn a former social club into flats and a kitchen and bathroom showroom.

Burnley-based home furniture business United Furniture (AB) Ltd wants to redevelop the ex-Burnley League Club in Richard Street.

The kitchen and bathroom showroom with workshops would be built on the ground floor, while a new first and second floor would be constructed to provide for 10 one-bedroom apartments.

While the existing car parking area would also be extended to provide extra car parking and servicing.

The site comprises what was the former Burnley League Club which was a social club providing a bar, function room and games room facilities.

But the club have since left the building and it currently stands empty.

Planning officers at Burnley Council have delegated powers for the plans, which means they will not have to be considered by planners.

The proposal presents an opportunity for United Furniture Ltd to expand and relocate from their existing premises in Rushworth Street, Burnley.

In planning documents on behalf of United Furniture Ltd, Avalon Town Planning Ltd, said the company has outgrown its existing premises.

They said: “The company has outgrown its existing premises which lacks car parking and workshop areas and Rushworth Street is narrow and not suitable to serve the use.

“This (Burnley League Club) is an existing modern building in a regeneration area.

“The previous use has ceased and these proposals will allow the relocation and expansion of an existing Burnley business.

The existing buildings will require extension to accommodate the business use.

“This can be adequately provided in terms of car parking by the addition of an extra area of land to the rear currently owned by the council.

“The proposals will regenerate an existing brownfield site within the established urban area and such meet the sustainability objectives of national and local planning policy. “

Previously the Irish Democratic League Club, the former social club includes a lounge bar, function room with a raised stage, a games area with another bar as well as a private office.
