THREE fire engines were called to a Burnley home after a lit cigarette ignited a bin bag.

Crews led a woman in her 40s from the bungalow in Brandwood Grove, Turf Moor, who was suffering from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters from Burnley and Nelson fire stations attended the incident around 7pm tonight.

Crew manager Kieron Ogden said: "Neighbours were alerted by a smoke alarm.

"The occupant had put a lighted cigarette in a bin bag by the front door ready to put out with the rubbish.

"It caught fire and she managed to push the keys through the door to a neighbour and retreated to a back room.

"When we arrived we sent in four crew members with breathing apparatus and extinguished the fire and led the lady in her 40s out to safety.

"She was suffering from smoke inhalation and was a bit confused and was taken to hospital for a check up.

"This illustrates the importance of putting all cigarettes and smoking materials out properly before disposing of them."
