CONCERNS over the safety of a road have been raised after a car and a van collided.

Eyewitnesses said they saw a man cut out of a silver car by firefighters after the collision in Glen View Road, Burnley, yesterday.

The road was closed for more than an hour after the collision at 9am. Two fire crews from Burnley, police and a North West Air Ambulance were at the scene.

Inspector Paul Gaynor said a man suffered a broken arm and injuries to his head and right leg.

He said : "The man was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries.”

Eyewitness Martyn Bell, a Glen View Road resident, said there has been a series of crashes on the road in the past decade.

He said: “It is a very, very dangerous road. I campaigned for more than 10 years to reduce the speed limit of the road but more needs to be done.

“The 60mph hour zone, which stops a bit further down from my house, should be moved further away to reduce the speed of cars coming around the bend.

“I’m not saying the vehicles involved in this crash were speeding, but there’s been cases of crashes and speeding in the past.

“There’s been several motorbike accidents over the years, we had a car plough straight into a tree too.”

Motorists were advised to use different routes as the vehicles were removed from the middle of the road.

Mr Bell said: “It’s worrying for older residents because cars race through and they struggle to cross the road or get out of taxis because of the fear of being hit.”

Cllr Gordon Birtwistle, who has lived on the road for more than 40 years and represents the area on Burnley Council, said: “I saw the road was blocked as I left my house and there was quite a lot of traffic about due to the incident.

“It is a really bad turn down there.”
