A MAN arrested following crowd trouble at Burnley’s pre-season friendly against Hannover has been released without charge.

Police are continuing to investigate whether away fans managed to get knives into the stadium but confirmed no weapons had been recovered.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing fans of the German Bundesliga side charge towards home supporters during the first half at Turf Moor. Fans of the German side were also alleged to have thrown seats into the home section of the stand just minutes before the half-time whistle.

One police officer and three stewards were injured following the disorder, which forced the match to be abandoned at half-time. All four people were taken to hospital but police said they have now been released.

Praising police and stewards, Burnley Football Club said it regularly reviews stadium security and that would continue. A police spokesman said: “Our enquiries into the incident are ongoing. One man was arrested on Saturday but he has now been released no further action.

“We cannot confirm whether anyone managed to get a weapon into the ground. That is something we continue to investigate. No weapons have been found.”

A spokesman for Burnley Football Club said: “As a club we are always reviewing our safety policy and that will continue. The fact no supporters were hurt on site was largely due to the stewards and police who put themselves on the line.”

Meanwhile, police are continuing to ask supporters who filmed the disorder to send them the footage.

Chief Superintendent, Chris Bithell, said: “The disorder we saw yesterday has no place in football, and certainly not in Lancashire. Children and families were in attendance at what was a pre-season friendly match, which should have passed peacefully and without incident – but which ended up being abandoned due to the behaviour of some of the travelling Hannover fans.

“Overnight we have collated and trawled through footage of the disorder, but we believe there will be more people who have videos on their phones which could help with our ongoing investigation.

“Anybody who has such footage is asked to send it to us as soon as possible.”
