A CANNABIS street dealer in Burnley has been told to heed his family’s advice after avoiding his first custodial sentence.

Nineteen-year-old Mirza Baig was stopped in Barden Lane by police with a friend, acting suspiciously, Burnley Crown Court was told.

He was carrying clear plastic snap bags, which could be used to dole out cannabis, the court heard.

And when police seized his mobile phone they discovered a series of texts relating to dealing.

Baig, of Grey Street, Burnley, admitted to possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

He was given a seven-month prison term, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to carry out 80 hours community service and pay £250 court costs.

Defence counsel James Heyworth said his client, a retail merchandiser, still lived with his family, who were disappointed by his behaviour. Baig had never been before in a crown court dock before.

Passing sentence, Judge Jonathan Gibson said: “You are 19 and living with your family and I suspect that they have more of an influence for good on you than anyone else.

“You should listen to them.”
