A MAN has been fined for being in possession of cigarettes which had packaging on that did not comply with the required warnings requirements.

Burnley Magistrates heard that Muhammed Zaman, 34, was in possession of the products at Pakistan Bangladesh Foodstore, Brougham Street, Burnley.

The first charge related to the discovery of 25 packets of John Player Gold Leaf Cigarettes found on January 13 and the second related to two packets of John Player Gold Leaf Cigarette found on March 22.

Zaman, of Norman Street in Burnley, admitted both offences.

For the first discovery he was fined £130, told to pay £140 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

For the second discovery he was fine £130.

In total he must pay the court £420 at a rate of £10 per week.

A forfeiture and destruction order was also made by the court under Section 16 of the Consumer Protection Act 1987.

The case was brought to the magistrates court by Lancashire Trading Standards.

The offences breached the Schedule to the Tobacco Products (Manufacture, Presentation and Sale) (Safety) Regulations 2002 as amended by the Tobacco Products (Manufacture, Presentation and Sale) Safety Regulations 2007, regulation 14(1) of the 2002 regulations.
