POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted in Burnley town centre in the early hours of Sunday (July 17th).

The incident occurred at approximately 5.45am, when a 41-year-old male was punched to the ground on James Street, following a verbal altercation with another male.

He was then punched and kicked to the head, suffering facial fractures which required hospital treatment.

A 24-year-old man from Burnley has since been arrested on suspicion of assault – actual bodily harm – and has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

DC Hannah Tofalos, of Burnley Police, said: “There were quite a few people in the area at this time and we believe somebody may have seen something.

“If you saw the incident, or believe you know anything about it, we would urge you to get in touch with us.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting log number 391 of July 17th.
