A MAN who caused Burnley General Hospital to be partly evacuated after making violent threats has been fined.

Burnley Magistrates Court heard the waiting room of the hospital's urgent care centre had to be evacuated on Sunday afternoon after Mohsan Khan made threats.

Khan, 34, of Burnley Road, Briercliffe, was convicted of using threatening, abusive, or insulting words to Gary Whippy, Steven Haworth and others with intent to cause them to believe that immediate unlawful violence would be used against them.

He was fined £80 and ordered to pay £80 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at around 3.40pm on Sunday to reports that a man was in the Urgent Care Centre at Burnley General Hospital and making threats. It looks as though the hospital evacuated the waiting room due to people becoming alarmed – it wasn’t police led."

Gillian Simpson, Director of Operations for East Lancashire Hospitals Trust said: “We can confirm there was an incident in the Burnley Urgent Care centre that required police attendance.  Staff at the unit acted quickly and implemented the required response to ensure the safety of all our patients and staff. ”
