A fire spokesman said: "We were called after residents said they could smell burning in the road all day.

"We located the fire in the derelict house in the middle of the street and forced our way in.

"The fire had pretty much burnt itself out, but the smoke had got into the loft and had worked its way into other people's houses.

"We believe the fire was started deliberately."

"We were there for around two hours making sure the fire was out and all the smoke had been extracted.

"There were no casualties."
