A DRIVER who left an eight-year-old boy with a fractured skull in a suspected hit-and-run is being urged to ‘search their conscience’ and hand themselves in.

Neighbours said Isa Saleem was crossing Hebrew Road in Burnley to a nearby playground on Grey Street when he was struck by a silver car.

Yesterday his family were said to be keeping a bedside vigil for the Heasandford Primary pupil as he was treated at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Police said the silver car failed to stop at the scene, just yards from the youngster’s home in Escott Gardens and they have launched an urgent appeal for witnesses.

A senior Burnley councillor is now demanding an overhaul of traffic calming measures along the busy route, which is often used as part of a shortcut to the M65.

Cllr Shah Hussain, who represents Daneshouse with Stoneyholme on the borough council, said: “My thoughts are with the boy and his family.

“I just hope he pulls through.

“I am appalled that the driver has not stopped.

“I would urge him to search his conscience and contact the police.”

The youngster, who is thought to have two brothers and two sisters, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

Last night his condition was said to be ‘stable’ and it is understood his mum Anisa has been by his bedside since his admission.

Neighbour Shareen Akhter, whose son was playing with Isa at the time of the collision, said: “She has been at the hospital with her children since Saturday night.

“He was just crossing the road to the park when it happened and I saw the ambulance and all the police cars outside.

“Hopefully he is going to come back to us.”

Her 11-year-old son Luqman said: “I couldn’t save him because there were two cars which came at once.”

Postmaster Wasim Yurragman said: “Hopefully someone will come forward.”

Another shopkeeper said: “We just heard the screech of the tyres then saw all of the emergency services arrive.

“You just hope that he’s going to be okay.”

Cllr Hussain said he has been lobbying, alongside fellow Daneshouse councillors, to update traffic-calming measures along Hebrew Road.

He said: “What we would like here is a sleeping policeman, with bumps every 20 yards or so, which we have also been campaigning for in Brougham Street.

“Drivers here often speed up to avoid the build-outs on Hebrew Road.

“We don’t know whether speed was an issue here but you do see it happening.”

Fellow ward councillor Saeed Chaudhary said: “I feel really sorry for the family.

“I would urge whoever was driving to come forward and speak to the police.”

PC Peter Brandon, from the road policing unit, said: “I am asking anyone who saw the collision or who may have any information that could help to come forward.

“Similarly, if you were driving a large silver vehicle and think you could have been involved, please come forward.

“At this stage it isn’t about pointing the finger of blame but about finding out what has happened to cause this incident.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
