A NEW free, family friendly exhibition will use Xbox Kinect technology to allow visitors' movements to affect a multi-coloured field of butterflies.

The exhibition has been created by internationally renowned artists Aether & Hemera.

It is called The Tree, The Caterpillar and the Butterfly opens at Towneley Hall, Burnley on Sunday, January 17.

As well as the butterfly experience, birdhouses will play birdsong as they respond to peoples' selections and visitors can use a magic watering can to make an LED pea tree grow.

The Tree, The Caterpillar and The Butterfly has been already shown at the DLI Museum and Art Gallery in Durham and was extremely popular with visitors of all ages.

Councillor Bea Foster, Burnley Council’s executive member for leisure and culture, said: “The artists Aether & Hemera have done a brilliant job of creating a new exhibition that will capture the imagination of families as well as being outstanding artistically.

“We look forward to seeing many more families in the gallery and promise them a very warm welcome.”

The previous two Generation Tour exhibitions, Generation AIR and Generation NOISE, have been highly successful in bringing new family audiences into four contemporary art galleries in the North of England.

Gloria Ronchi of Aether & Hemera, said: “We’re so pleased to be chosen to create the exhibition for the Generation Tour so the work can reach the widest possible age range.”

The Tree, The Caterpillar and The Butterfly will be on show at Towneley until February 21.

It will be followed by Musical Chairs exhibition in July.

Musical Chairs is another interactive Generation Tour exhibition offering a fresh take on the old parlour game.

Entry to the exhibition is free for Burnley residents.

During winter months Towneley Hall is open on Saturdays and Sundays between 12pm and 5pm.
