Council leader Mark Townsend said: “After the work carried out by the emergency services, with a lot of support from local volunteers and residents, the focus now is on taking action in the coming weeks to help people and businesses get back to normal.

“Burnley Council has received confirmation that government funding will be extended to those households affected, and this is welcome.

“We’ll be working closely with partner organisations over the coming days and weeks to distribute these funds, and we will try to make the process work as smoothly as possible.”

Every household affected will be eligible to receive £500 from a government fund, with payments to be made through Burnley Council.

Residents don’t have to make an appointment and are free to call in at anytime.

Meanwhile, a clean-up operation following the flooding which affected the Cliviger Gorge and Upper Calder Valley is still ongoing.

Engineers have been called in to remove tons of silt and debris from the River Calder off Rochdale Road in Todmorden, near the town’s Morrison’s store.

The debris had caused serious blockages at several points and worsened flooding issues.

Todmorden Town Hall is still being used as a flood relief centre for a number of affected householders locally.

Road restrictions are still in place on the A646 Burnley to Todmorden road after heavy rains compromised the integrity of the carriageway.
