POLICE are still hunting a gang of teenage yobs who threw fireworks at officers, attacked an ambulance on an emergency call with eggs and smashed the windscreen of a car with a rock in a night of vandalism in Burnley.

And police said that bonfire night in East Lancashire saw a considerable amount of fireworks confiscated.

Three youths were taken to the police station, and a van was stopped and seized after its driver was allegedly selling fireworks to youths in Blackburn.

And a mum from the town spoke of her terror after a gang of masked youths chucked a brick through her front window on Chestnut Gardens, Whalley Range, and then targeted her husband’s ice cream van.

Police are appealing to the public to identify the teenagers, believed to be aged 14 to 18, responsible for the Burnley incident, following the attacks in Princess Way, on Sunday.

Sgt Michael Burnett said: “This behaviour is a dangerous and foolhardy practice for all involved. It goes way beyond traditional trick-or-treat mischief-making and is serious criminal activity.

“Individual incidents included a female motorist who had the windscreen of her vehicle smashed with a chunk of masonry, an ambulance responding to an emergency was attacked with eggs and police officers attending the incident had fireworks thrown at them.”

North West Ambulance Service reported that emergency 999 had increased by 5.7 per cent on bonfire night, compared to the previous evening.

However, Lancashire Fire Service reported that the number of dangerous bonfires was markedly down.
