The pub, opposite the borough’s main police station, closed its doors last July and is said to have become isolated from the main circuit around Hammerton Street and Hargreaves Street.

Planning agent Matthew Wyatt said that the Victorian premises, which used to regularly host reggae nights, had failed to attract a potential landlord over the summer.

He added: “Given its age and condition, it is perceived likely that the building could easily fall into a state of dereliction if a new role is not secured.

“This would further serve to deter interest in the premises and it is noted that vandals have already smashed a number of the first floor windows that were not boarded up following closure.”

Six flats are being proposed by applicants AJP Chartered Surveyor. Two will have entrances off the street and the remaining four will be reached by a central lobby in the back yard.
