A BURNLEY Football Club fan has been banned from Turf Moor for throwing a coin towards the pitch after the Clarets’ Championship clash with Reading.

Several items were hurled from the stands after the home side failed to claw back early goals from the visitors on Saturday, September 26.

Two bottles and assorted other missiles were thrown towards one of the Royals’ players from the lower tier of the James Hargreaves Stand.

One supporter, who has not been named, has been given a three-month stadium ban after being identified as the coin thrower.

And club security chiefs are studying CCTV footage in a bid to pinpoint the bottle thrower.

A Burnley Football Club spokesman said: “As a result of this, fans have been warned that throwing items on to the Turf Moor pitch, or at other supporters, will result in a stadium ban.

“The law currently states that is a criminal offence to throw anything on to a football pitch — and Burnley Football Club is currently studying detailed CCTV footage to identify the bottle-throwing culprit.”

Last season the club issued bans for 21 supporters involved in extended violence at Burnley Miners Club following the visit of Sheffield Wednesday.

The violence involved chairs and tables being smashed and away fans left with head and leg injuries.

Club bosses were also forced to field a number of questions about security when they signed ex-Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton, who had previously been the victim of a bottle-throwing incident.

The club spokesman said: “The club has reiterated its stance on all criminal activity within Turf Moor, that even if the police decide not to pursue any convictions the club will ban the individual or individuals concerned for a period of time.

“Their conduct will be continuously monitored and, if they are involved in any further criminal incidents relating to football, inside or outside Turf Moor, they will be dealt with by extended stadium bans.”
