Doherty, 62, of no fixed address, admitted failing to comply with the requirements of the sex offender register. He was remanded in custody to Burnley Crown Court to be sentenced.

Prosecutor Catherine Allan said Doherty had a significant record of sexual offences, including a rape in 1998 and a sexual assault on a boy in 2005 when he was put on the sex offenders’ register.

“Since then he has been before the courts seven times for breaching the requirements of that order,” said Miss Allan.

“When arrested in Manchester, he said he knew he would be caught, but was trying to remain at liberty for as long as possible.”

Janet Sime, defending, said he had gone to his registered address, but had been threatened and didn’t think it was safe.
