AN East Lancashire teenager has been named the number one scooter rider in the country after a successful year-long competition.

Dexter Williams, 14, from the Rose Hill area of Burnley, finished top of the UK rankings in the novice open category and also won the best trick category at the National Scooter GB Championships finals at the Sports Beat Music and Sport festival in Gloucester last weekend.

The Unity College student discovered his love of scooter riding while on holiday with his family.

His mum Liza said: “It started three years ago when we were on holiday in Cornwall. We bought him a scooter to entertain himself and he loved it.

“After we got home, he bought a better one and went to indoor parks to practise whenever possible. After a while he entered his first competition.

“It is absolutely amazing to see your son do something he loves and to do so well in it.

Lancashire Telegraph:

“When I watch Dexter, I have to get one of the other mums to hold the camera to record him because im so nervous watching him.”

The budding rider went to competition R-Kade, a skatepark in Redcar, Middlesbrough, for novice riders, and took first place.

From then on, Dexter entered the Scoot Sport GB competition which started last October and took place in heats up and down the country.

Dexter, of Marton Drive, came first in all but one of the regional finals, which earned him a place in the UK championship final.

With more than 30 riders in each category, he had to deliver a variety of tricks and performances in one and two minute runs.

Dexter said: “I used to ride a BMX but now I prefer riding a scooter, I just love the thrill of being on them.

“I’m always nervous before a competition.

“You don’t know how well you are going to do or how well you will land a trick.”
