THE big football match of the weekend isn’t the Wembley Charity Shield clash between Arsenal and Chelsea – it’s Burnley Fans Team vs Vintage Clarets.

The charity game is in aid of The Gary Parkinson Trust and Kidneys For Life and kicks off at Nelson Football Club’s Victoria Park ground on Sunday at 12.30pm.

Parkinson scored the play-off final winner against Stockport which saw Burnley promoted to the First Division in 1994 but he suffered a severe stroke in September 2010, leading to a diagnosis of locked-in syndrome.

Darwen is staging its second food and craft festival on Saturday, August 1, from 10am to 4pm at Darwen Town Hall Square and Bridge Street.

The festival will showcase the best of local produce, including cheese, beers, pies, artisan bread, ice cream, cakes and international cuisine.

From 1pm until 10pm on Saturday a group of DJs whose lives have been touched by cancer are organising the Beats Cancer music festival at Clitheroe Castle.

The last two days of a Roman archaeological dig in Ribchester will also be open to the public.

Students from UCLan have been working in two trenches digging fort artefacts, such as pottery and ancient coins.

Dr Duncan Sayer, senior archaeology lecturer at UCLan, said: “This Ribchester dig is a great example of the real life hands-on projects they get involved with.”

If you’ve been inspired by Chris Froome’s second Tour de France victory there’s Sky Ride events across the county this weekend, including a four-mile cycle from Tesco Car park in Accrington at 2pm and an eight-mile loop from Cafe Cargo, in Foulridge, at 10am.

The children will be able to dress as knights and princesses on Saturday for a series of events at Clitheroe Castle, including a search of the grounds, fancy dress and craft sessions.

On Sunday, David Walliams’ popular novel is brought to life in an interactive, adaptation of the family favourite Mr Stink at Brockholes Nature Reserve at 5pm on Sunday.

The Ribble Valley also hosts a spooky tour of Samlesbury Hall, when Simon Entwistle leads a history lesson through the 14th century manor house from 11am on Sunday.

And the world’s greatest steam train is in the county, with a Day Out With Thomas running on the East Lancashire Railway on both Saturday and Sunday between 9am and 5pm.
