Bishop Philip said: “I am so sorry to see Burnley relegated from the Premier League.

“Since becoming Bishop of Burnley in February it has been a privilege to get to know Burnley FC who are that rare thing in contemporary football, a real community club.

“Matches are a family affair with amazing local support and people of all ages and backgrounds turning up to cheer on their team.”

The Bishop, who grew up supporting Arsenal, has become a well-known figure in relation to the club in the few short months since his arrival.

He pledged to pray for Burnley FC after the announcement of his appointment as Bishop.

Last month he watched the team he supports beat the Clarets 1-0 at Turf Moor, and his divided loyalties made national headlines, including an appearance on Match of the Day.

Bishop Philip said: “The community spirit of Burnley FC is evident everywhere.

“On my first Sunday in a local church half the congregation at St Peter’s left very quickly after the service because they were going to the match.

“I have also been massively impressed by the role the team plays in the town. I have toured the area and I have been to a number of schools and community groups who have received outstanding support from the club.

“Burnley FC are generous in allowing their facilities to be used by charitable groups and community organisations.
