WORK on a £50,000 initiative to assist young golfers and first-time players in Burnley is set to be celebrated at the town's Glen View course this weekend.

An official launch has been pencilled in for a new academy centre at Burnley Golf Club, which includes top-of-the-range indoor tuition aids, following a successful Sport England bid.

The centre plans have been in the pipeline since at least February 2014, when club officials lodged proposals for the facility, along with an on-course toilet block, with the borough council.

Residents expressed some concerns but they were told that it would lead to no loss of light and that students would be under constant supervision from a trained professional.

Joyce Green MBE, a golf club trustee, said, "We have been working so hard on improving our course and club house and this new building completes the package, offering the latest in golf teaching technology, unique to our area.

"We especially want to welcome new people into our club to celebrate with us, have a go at golf and find out about the events, competitions, tuition and membership opportunities on offer at our club."

This Sunday (Apr12) will not only see a 'nearest the pin' competition but free taster sessions golf demonstrations, and a shortened 'tri-golf' game for youngsters, offering a 'fun' introduction to the sport.

Gordon Birtwistle, borough councillor for the area, said: "The completion of this project, funded from the investment of £50,000 from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund to build this new facility is fantastic for Burnley.

"This investment in training and tuition facilities will encourage local people, particularly young people into this very active and skilful game."

Club PGA professional Sam Punchard, who has recently been appointed at Burnley, will be on hand to offer advice and is also keen to extend his coaching into local schools.

Club officials were also keen to see the new academy further their links with both the sports departments at Burnley College and the University of Central Lancashire campus on Princess Way.

Recently the clubhouse at Glen View has also been renovated, including an upgrade to the lounge area.
