The proposed 1,699 square metre store, at the junction of Todmorden Road and Holmes Street, would see the existing Fulledge Works building demolished.

Aldi already has a Burnley store, less than a mile away in Active Way, as well as stores in Blackburn, Colne, Accrington, Great Harwood and Ramsbottom.

In its leaflets, the company said: “These stores are very popular in the communities they serve. Aldi believes the introduction of a new store off Todmorden Road would offer a real opportunity to increase choice for the local community in the east of Burnley.

“Aldi has carefully designed its proposal to ensure the development sits comfortably within its surroundings.”

Aldi is currently building a store in Whalley Road, Clitheroe, which is set to bring 50 jobs to the Ribble Valley.

Its latest Burnley scheme includes the provision of 90 car parking spaces, with access on to Todmorden Road.

The leaflets added: “A new Aldi food store in this location would serve the local community, providing a brand new custom-built store, designed to complement the existing retail offering and provide more choice for local residents.

“If approved, our plans would allow local residents to purchase deeply-discounted quality products.”

The firm added: “Aldi aims for its managers to be local, which allows them to react quickly and sympathetically to any local issues.

“A new Aldi food store in Burnley would provide a complementary offer to Burnley’s existing pattern of trading, encouraging residents to complete their shopping need within the area, as well as helping to keep spend local and adding to the vitality of the area.”

East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce chief executive, Mike Damms, said: “This is very good news that people want to invest in Burnley.

“We have seen that in an upcoming trend. It will be interesting to see how the other supermarkets position themselves.

“I look forward to seeing what impact it has, and the jobs are obviously welcome too.”

The public exhibition will take place at the Salvation Army Community Centre in Richard Street, from 3pm to 7pm tomorrow.
