A VIOLENT confrontation between Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday supporters left a social club littered with broken furniture and smashed glasses, a court heard.

One supporter in a wheelchair was left suffering a head wound and a boy aged around 11 was hurt when Clarets and away supporters clashed at Burnley Miners Club in January, 2014.

Four more men have gone on trial at Preston Crown Court in relation to the major disturbance, Graeme Scott, 40, of Mitella Street, Mark Butler, 24, of Deerpark Road, Lee Tattersall, 34, of Bluebell Grove, and Terry Wall, 19, of Creswuck Avenue, all Burnley, all deny charges of violent disorder.

Jurors have been shown CCTV footage of the club’s foyer and clips of the alleged role each of the men is said to have played in the violence.

Prosecutor Joseph Allman said: “It does not matter if you are at the front throwing punches, in the middle throwing bottles or at the back shouting encouragement. If you are part of the crowd, you are part of that violence.”

The court heard that the situation only calmed down when more police arrived and the officers managed to guide the Sheffield Wednesday fans back to their minibus. PC Christopher Breckle said he drew his extendable baton as fans faced each other.

, the second officer on the scene after Pc Mark Crossley, said it was the ‘most voltatile’ situation he had faced in 10 years of policing. He feared for his safety and drew his extendable baton, as rival supporters faced each other across a hallway.
