The school, which provides secondary education for students with emotional or behavioural difficulties, was noted for having a strong leadership.

While inspectors praised students for being well-behaved, motivated by the school’s high expectations of them, and showed positive attitudes to learning.

Head teacher Russell Bridge said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with our Ofsted report. We are a small, close-knit community and we work extremely hard to make our school a success, and I include our pupils in that.”“I want to thank everyone connected with the school for their unstinting effort. I am a relatively new head, I only came to the Rose in September, so I include my predecessor in those thanks.

“I was delighted with the positive feedback from the parent and carer questionnaires. By working together the school we will go from strength to strength and enable us all ‘to be the best that we can be’.”

The report said: “Many students enter school with very low reading, writing and mathematical skills. Timely and effective programmes of support enable students to make good progress in these areas. In relation to their starting points, they make consistently good progress across all year groups and achieve well.

“Students are proud to be members of the school community and wear their uniform with pride.

“Students report that they feel safe when in school and that incidents of bullying are rare.

“Year-11 students, without exception, gain a range of qualifications suitable to their abilities, which enables almost all of them to go on to further education and training.

“Most students, including those attending alternative provision, demonstrate positive attitudes to learning, which supports good progress in literacy and mathematics.”

Inspectors noted that for the school to further improve teachers’ written feedback to students needs to be consistent across all classes.

And students need more opportunities to respond to teachers’ comments in marking.
