A BURNLEY school has teamed up with councillors to tackle dangerous parking outside the gates.

Parents at Rosegrove Infant School said pupils’ lives were at risk as “a significant number of cars” mounted the pavements outside the Owen Street school each morning.

Rosegrove with Lowerhouse Cllr Paul Reynolds has funded a signage scheme to warn motorists against parking there.

A number of road safety signs are now in place on the pavements outside the school which read: “Think! Parking here could endanger a child’s life”.

The Labour member launched the scheme earlier this week after securing a grant from Burnley Council’s Ward Opportunities Fund.

Cllr Reynolds said: “I’m really pleased that my Labour colleagues and I have been able to respond to local parents’ concerns about road safety at Rosegrove Infant School.

“We like to use Ward Opportunities Fund money to address community concerns and this is a good example of partnership working between local councillors, Burnley Police and our wonderful local infants school.

“Let’s hope that drivers think again about their parking habits and play their part in making our children feel safe and secure when going to and from school each day.”

The idea was developed in partnership with the school’s head teacher, Jackie Stewart and Rosegrove with Lowerhouse PCSO Alex Catterall.

A school spokesman said: “The signs highlight the fact that parking in this way can endanger the safety of school pupils and even put their lives at risk. It is hoped that the signs will encourage drivers to change their behaviour and put children’s safety at the top of their motoring priorities.”

Cllr Reynolds, who said he encouraged his council colleagues to approve the costs of the project because of his commitment to children’s safety, was joined at the launch of the signs by fellow Rosegrove with Lowerhouse councillor Bea Foster and community activist Chris Keene.
